xpPhone runs Windows XP, gets costumed as a MID

You see, the name "xpPhone" is rather disingenuous here. At first glance, you may assume that you're about to discover what's likely the planet's first cellular telephone to run a full-fledged version of Windows XP. Sadly, we've got to slot the device shown above squarely into the MID category -- GSM support be darned. Still, we can't help but applaud the engineering efforts; after all, this thing somehow packs an AMD CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchpanel, WiFi, various cell radios, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a battery good for five solid hours of use into a device barely larger than the average, yawn-inducing MID found in every last corner of Computex. In fact, it's so impressive that we're beginning to question its authenticity as a real, working product. Much like the number of licks to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know.

Sony Ericsson Launches Green Phones, Will Consumers Care?

Research firm ABI has said that most cell phone makers’ green phone intentions often fade “like a wireless signal in an underground parking lot,” but some phone makers are still launching green-branded product lines. This morning Sony Ericsson is announcing its “GreenHeart” phones and phone gear, which have a 15 percent smaller carbon footprint, an online manual (no paper), smaller packaging, and made of at least 50 percent recycled plastics. The launch lineup includes the C901 and the Naite, which are pretty standard phones other than the more sustainable designs and branding.

Sony Ericsson, which currently ranks near the top of Greenpeace’s Green Electronics Guide, says it plans to eventually incorporate the GreenHeart features into the rest of its broader phone portfolio — which probably means that doing things like using recycled materials, getting rid of paper manuals and reducing carbon emissions from the phone footprint actually makes economic sense.

Palm Pres available tonight to invited Premier customers at launch events

This won't apply to many of you, but just a little public service announcement to members of Sprint's elite Premier corps: you can get your Pre tonight if you've received an invitation to do so and you're willing to make the trek to one of ten stores around the country where launch parties are being held. Our understanding is that this is strictly an invite-only event and that non-Premier riff raff (and non-Sprint customers) will be turned away, but honestly, if we were in the market for a Pre, we'd probably loiter for a bit just to see what's up and get a gauge on whether they're willing to bend the rules -- particularly if the Pres end up not selling out by the time the night's over. Either way, if you want a Pre this weekend you'll need to leave your basement at some point because the phone won't be sold online initially -- so let us know how it goes out there in the trenches, folks, and we'll do the same. Stay tuned!

Microsoft Zune HD - MP3 player

USA Today reports that Microsoft will be launching a new improved version of their popular MP3 player this fall - and it’s going to be packing some pretty impressive specs.

The Zune HD will allow users to play files through a docking station on HD televisions and will also apparently link up with the X Box “to create a game-changing entertainment experience”. Even better (as far as I’m concerned) it will feature a Touch Screen, Web Browser And HD Radio Receiver. The screen’s use of organic light-emitting diodes should also improve battery life and image quality.

SilverPac SilverFrame SideShow And Frame

SilverPac has announced a new digital frame at COMPUTEX Taipei that has a plethora of features and is built on Microsoft Windows Embedded 6.0. The SilverFrame features all of Microsoft’s software features like Windows SideShow for helpful gadgets and Windows Live FrameIt for online content consumption. From the hardware side, the digital frame features a 10.1? touchscreen with 802.11n wireless capability.

The Windows SideShow gadgets are actually pretty interesting, no other digital picture frame has delivered on frame-based gadgets. This feature alone has the potential to give the frame much more functionality than simple slideshow playback. For instance, users will be able to connect the frame to their wireless network and use the Windows Media Player gadget to browse and play their music and video files.

Tongfong S30A Laptop

Chinese developer TongFong opted in its S30A ultraportable to go with an uncommon VIA processor instead of the ubuitous Intel Atom CPU found in most small laptops. The VIA CPU is clocked at 1.3 GHz — a bit lower than the 1.6 GHz Intels that seem to be in everything these days, but it should do well enough for very basic web browsing and e-mail.

This laptop also has two gigabytes of RAM, discrete graphics, and even an HDMI port in addition to a VGA port, so it looks a bit more like an ultraportable than a netbook apart from the very slow processor. That’s not a huge surprise, since it has a 13.3-inch screen, making it a tad bigger than a netbook. It even has a DVD burner! We like to count our blessings here at Obsessable, you know.
