Orange Introduces New Mini Sim Cards To Reduce The Waste By Half

The moment we step on a foreign soil, we buy a new SIM card for our cell phones. And Orange has announced it green plans to cut down on the amount of waste generated with this habit. Though it sounds very trivial issue, the trend of receiving new SIMs for an upgrade or new contract does leave its share of carbon footprints on our planet too. Orange has become the first European mobile operator to introduce mini SIM cards to support our environment.

How will it help? Till now the new SIMs come embedded in a credit-card sized plastic wrapping. However, only ten percent of the material is used for the plug-in SIM. The rest of the 90% of the card’s plastic is waste. But the new mini SIM cards will halve the amount of waste generated in providing customers with new SIMs by embedding two SIMs in each credit-card sized item during manufacturing.

Accelerometers Becoming Mainstream, Driven By iPhone

Over one-third of mobile phones are expected to integrate accelerometers by 2010, according to the research firm iSuppli. Widespread adoption of the Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors is being driven by popular devices such as Apple’s iPhone and the recently-launched Palm Pre. Although the trend continues to develop in the smartphone segment, the technology is also being used in simpler devices.

The iPhone is one of the first devices to utilize an accelerometer for a wide range of functions and input. The 3-axis motion sensor enables the device to switch screen orientation, or move through tracks as it is shaken. Many of the third-party games use motion input for control, instead of a dedicated joystick or input buttons.

HIS Makes Radeon HD 4350 With Pcie X1 Interface

Apart from its occasional IceQ models HIS is pretty much keeping a low profile with its graphics card offer so it’s quite intriguing to see it come up with a PCI-Express x1 Radeon. The HD 4350 iFan comes with the RV710 GPU boasting 80 Stream Processors, 512MB of DDR2 memory and a 64-bit memory interface, active cooling, plus D-Sub, DVI and HDMI outputs.

The PCIe X1 card, which could be an interesting choice for boards without an x16 slot, is clocked exactly the same as its PCIe x16 brothers, which means the GPU and memory are set to 600 and 800 MHz, respectively. The catch with HIS’ card is that it will be almost three times more expensive than the PCIe x16 versions.

Dell Offers Ready-To-Ship PCs, Custom-Look Inspiron

Dell this morning kicked off its first-ever offerings of fast-ship PCs. Offered under the FastTrack banner, the systems can’t be customized but ship by the next business day, eliminating the delay of two weeks or more that often accompanies ordering a system from Dell. The approach is based on the popularity of Dell’s custom-order configurations and should be continuously refreshed to mirror what customers actually want.

On launch day, the FastTrack lineup includes four models. The Inspiron Mini 10v ships in its usual $299 base trim with a 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. An Inspiron 537 tower ships for $499 (on sale) with a 2.5GHz Pentium dual-core, 3GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and a 17-inch LCD.
