Intel Launches Data Center Efficiency Challenge

Intel considers the new Intel Xeon Processor 5500 series as its most important launch within these last 15 years. Intel’s belief is that the Xeon 5500 can lead to better processor-based systems than those based on its older 5400 series. As a promotion for the new processor, Intel launched its data center efficiency challenge open to those working in the IT sector. According to Intel, the contest is for those with “fresh perspectives” on how to make organizations more efficient.

Altec Lansing iMT702 InMotion MAX iPod Dock Review

The inMotion MAX measures 310 x 190 x 50mm with the dock drawer and stand folded away, so it is a pretty compact unit. As said, it features an iPod drawer which pops out of the front with the normal variety of inserts to best support your model of iPod or iPhone. The great thing about this is that if you are not using your iPod, you can hide the dock itself away - also a bonus when travelling with the iMT702.

Most of the front is covered with mesh, behind which lurk the four 2.5-inch drivers, with the dock drawer at the base and a small LCD display at the top. The display glows yellow, giving you track information from your iPod or info from the FM radio.

It is, however, only 45mm wide, so only displays eight characters at any time. Given the space available across the front of the unit, we’d have liked a little more out of the display, but as it, fo

Examining The Samsung Magnet For AT&T

Of the six major phones announced this week to be coming on AT&T soon, we were happy to take a gander at all six of them at CTIA. A couple of the phones such as the Samsung Impression and Nokia E71x hogged most of the attention as all the buzz seemed to be upon them.

One of the phones left out of the spotlight at CTIA was the Samsung Magnet. In fact, I quickly discovered that the Magnet was nowhere to be found in the Samsung booth! After asking around, one of the reps graciously found a Magnet for me to play with.

There’s good reason why the Magnet has been left out of the spotlight — there’s really not much to it, when compared to the Impression, S30, and Propel Pro that debuted at the show. It’s just a simple messaging device sans 3G and GPS and all the goodies that come on every other phone.

ASUS RT-N15 SuperSpeed N Gigabit Wireless Router Review

ASUS has been hard at work making themselves a global brand name. In recent years they have moved forward with a large number of products. In keeping with their already high standard for their components ASUS has produced some great networking products as well.

We have had their WL-500gP V2 in house recently and although it lacked in speed, it had features found in more expensive products. Now we have their RT-N15 SuperSpeed N Gigabit Wireless Router. This wireless device claims a 300Mbps speed and a host of other features. We dive in and see if the RT-N15 can keep up.

Hands On: Garmin-Asus Nuvifone M20

Electronista at CTIA had a chance to take a closer look at the Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20. The handset offers a smaller form factor than the G60 and looks more like a phone than a GPS navigator. Every dimension has been shrunk, with 17 mm cut from the height and a width reduction of 6 mm. The M20 is described as a phone with GPS functionality, while the G60 is more of a GPS with phone functionality. The company also dropped the Linux operating system for Windows Mobile 6.1. The M20 offers a 2.8-inch touchscreen which could be more difficult to see when using a car mount, compared to the 3.55-inch display on the G60. Instead of using the whole front surface for the screen, as with the standalone nüvi, the company added two buttons and a five-way directional key. Several of the interface features were easier to navigate with the extra controls.

Samsung: Two Android Phones This Year, Less Google Inside

Forbes sat down with Samsung’s global phone guy at CTIA who says the electronics giant will release three Android phones this year. The first will be around June and released outside the US, probably Europe. Two other Android phones will be released in the US later this year on two different carriers, most likely T-Mobile and Sprint.

Samsung is taking longer on the two US phones because they wanted to go less Google. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me since I feel one of the strengths of Android is the tight integration with the Google applications like GMail. Samsung doesn’t see it this way and they are not planning to release the Google focused apps. Doesn’t that mean they are losing the primary thing that differentiates Android from the competition?

HTC To Debut Its Newest Qwerty Smartphone ‘HTC Snap’

HTC Corporation debuted its newest qwerty smartphone ‘HTC Snap’ at CTIA Wireless 2009 from April 1-3, 2009 in Las Vegas. Designed with a set of features selected to deliver everything customers need without overwhelming them with things they don’t, the HTC Snap makes it easier than ever to stay in contact with life’s most important people.

A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by HTC* found that 44% of US adults are often overwhelmed by the amount of email they receive, and over half (55%) of US adults prioritize five or fewer people with whom they communicate via email. In response to these issues, HTC’s innovative Inner Circle feature allows HTC Snap users to press a dedicated Inner Circle key to bring emails from a preselected group of people to the top of their inbox, enabling important messages to be acted upon immediately.

Nvidia To Dx11 Products Out In Q4

nVidia will finally upgrade from DX10 to DX11. After skipping out on the DX10.1 release nVidia is going straight for DX11 and their first DX11 hardware should ship in Q4 this year.

It is expected that this will be the GT300 and could possibly be the first 40nm card from nVidia but nothing is certain.

One thing of concern is that this DX11 GPU might be the next new item to come out of nVidia. This will make for a long boring refresh/reband fill year until we see really new innovation.

InWin X-Fighter Review

The futuristic sci-fi Star Wars films have influenced and inspired the design of In Win’s X-Fighter case with its triangular feet, geometric lines and steel and aluminium chassis. All this makes the X-Fighter into the ultimate spaceship but how will it fare at doing its job as a PC enclosure? The aesthetics certainly look great, so let’s see what the rest is like.

The X-Fighter’s packaging certainly lives up to the spacecraft design with the front featuring a large image of the case emitting a green light. The case looks like it has just descended from the spacecraft hovering above it again showered in spectral green light. The X-Fighter title is in a strange font fitting in again with the space theme with the In Win logo finishing off the bottom.

LG Versa Review

When it comes to industrial design, most mobile handsets fall into the candy bar or flip phone categories, but people interested in both could grab the LG Versa. It has an attachable keyboard shell that’s easy to connect and turns the single-screen touchscreen phone into a horizontal model with a full QWERTY. Luckily, the well-functioning keyboard isn’t just a gimmick, making the LG Versa a solid, if not awe-inspiring option for your smartphone dollar.

The LG Versa has a candy bar phone form factor, which is quickly becoming the de facto shape for such devices. It measures four inches by two inchesjust over a half-inch thick, and has a metallic black and silver design. It weighs just under four ounces, despite looking and feeling a lot lighter, as well.
