Intel’s Rumored CPU Price Drops, New Chips

Rumor has it Intel is set to drop its prices as well as introduce new processor models. If they come to fruition, some CPUs could see price drops of up to 20 percent. According to DigiTimes, Intel is also said to be rolling out new processors next month. Reports say April 19 will see the launch of the Q8400 (95W) and Q8400S (65W), both clocked to 2.66 GHz but priced at $183 and $245, respectively.

The same report, which cites sources at motherboard manufacturers says that we’ll see more processors introduced at the end of May, including Celeron and Pentium Dual-Core parts, the Core 2 Duo E7600 and two new Core i7s: the 3.06 GHz 950 and the 3.33 GHz 975, priced at $562 and $999, respectively. The news comes just a couple of months after Intel dropped the prices on several processors significantly, with some of the cuts amounting to as much as 48 percent. The company’s Celeron Mobile 570, Core 2 Quad Q9650 and Xeon X3370 all saw cuts of over 40 percent.

iPod Shuffle 3G In-Depth Review

Apple unveiled the new talking iPod shuffle 3G about 2 weeks ago. The opinions are mixed on this newest iPod. It is tiny, but the talking and the moving of the controls to the headset cord sparked discussion. We featured already an early iPod shuffle 3G Review. Now Apple Insider took their time and publishes an in-depth review of the new iPod shuffle 3G.

Quote from the review: “Outside of a slightly more complicated sync process, it’s still the quintessential exercise iPod and the most likely to be a companion to an iPhone or one of Apple’s larger iPods. The addition of playlists alone may tip the balance for those who wanted more diversity in what they could play, and the remote-borne input is easier to manage in mid-run than a player bouncing and jiggling on your clothes. Also, those with most existing iPod shuffles who wanted an upgrade in capacity will no doubt be happy. As much as the slow transfer speeds make syncing an exercise in patience, 4GB allows for much more diversity in music than the 1GB of space most iPod shuffles have had in the past.”

Samsung’s Nc10 Successor, The N110, Announced And Reviewed

There’s nothing like a little surprise to get the week off on the right foot, so thanks to Samsung for getting us rolling by sneaking a successor to its venerable NC10 netbook straight into the willing hands of Laptop Magazine, where it was stealthily given the full review treatment. From what we can tell this new N110 is mainly a style refresh, offering the same keyboard 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, memory, and storage of the NC10, as well as the bigger battery and more usable touchpad the company added to the recent special edition — now clad in a sophisticated, red-rimmed, matte exterior. With battery life topping eight hours in real-world usage, and a price of $469, this one picks up where its predecessor left off and seems like a good choice for those who want a little more style with their netbooking — or who are too impatient to wait for the NC20.

The Momentus 7200.2 hard drives are ideal for mainstream and performance-class laptops, small form factor PCs and many other small or mobile environments where performance and size are critical. Since many older laptops featured drives under 60GB many users are finding themselves running out of space. ASUS Eee Top Review - Touch Screen Desktop PC

At CES 2009, Justin had the opportunity to attend ASUS’s Presentation of their new Eee product line. During the presentation, the new ASUS Eee Top, an innovative and affordable touch screen computer that was to be made available in the near future, was introduced. The Eee Top was designed with usefulness and convenience in mind. It is an excellent solution for networking, as an educational tool in small meetings or classrooms, leaving memos without the paper waste, or even for using at home for something as simple as looking up recipes online without taking up hardly any counter space! Read on to see what this innovative piece of technology can do for you!

As you can tell from the picture above, something seems to be missing. However, there is no need for a mouse, keyboard, or even a tower! The Eee Top also lacks an optical drive, but ASUS provides a solution - the DRW-08D1S-U Diamond slim USB DVD drive, which we will discuss in a later review. The Eee Top appears to be little more than an LCD monitor, but it offers so much more than that! ASUS claims that the Eee Top was designed to be an “intuitive Internet device and central communication hub.” At just $569.99 at the time of this article, the ASUS Eee Top promises to be quite a deal! Here are the specs for the ASUS Eee Top:

NVIDIA Ion - Intel Atom Done Right? Review

Today I have something special for everyone! I’ve spent the past couple of weeks playing with one of the NVIDIA Ion reference platforms and get to bring you my thoughts on this new innovative platform. The NVIDIA Ion platform has been one of the most anticipated platforms since it was shown off at CES back in January 2009, and even more so when the performance numbers were released later that same month. The NVIDIA Ion reference PC that I will be looking at today uses an Intel Atom 230 processor, a single 2GB DDR3 1066MHz SO-DIMM memory module, and the GeForce 9400M 256MB graphics processing unit. This system is basically what one will find in a high-end netbook, but has been placed in a sleek and sexy small form factor case that has Home Theater PC (HTPC) or media PC written all over it.

The NVIDIA Ion reference PC weighed in at 1.4 pounds and chassis was a mere 5.6 x 4.3 x 1.5-inch box that looks too small to contain a full PC. The NVIDIA Ion does include a cooling fan inside, but to help get the heat out NVIDIA laser cut in a thermal vent into the top of the chassis. This cooling vent also serves for branding as it was cut in the shape of NVIDIA’s ‘eye’ logo. Looking at the NVIDIA Ion by itself, it doesn’t look too special, so let’s place it next to some objects that you might be familiar with.

Apple MacBook Pro 17″ Review

The new MacBook Pro 17in comes equipped with a new Core 2 Duo, LED backlit display, new Nvidia graphics, and an updated aluminium chassis with a brand new battery that boasts a battery life of up to eight hours on a single charge.

It can also be recharged around 1,000 times before wearing out, which is approximately five years of normal use and around three times the predicted lifespan of a standard notebook battery.

Brilliant battery

Apple has achieved this by making the battery non-removable. This has the drawback of having to get it professionally replaced when it eventually wears out, but the space saved on hatches and mechanisms has facilitated a bigger, more powerful battery.

Nvidia Quietly Launches Geforce 100-Series GPUs

Nvidia’s recent rebadging exercises haven’t proved particularly popular with either the press or consumers recently, which could explain why the company hasn’t made a big fanfare about its latest rebranding scheme. The company has surreptitiously already launched its new GeForce 100-series, resulting in the GeForce GTS 150, GT 130, GT 120 and G100.

What’s particularly interesting, however, is that we only found out about the cards by browsing through Nvidia’s website, which lists the new 100-series cards. There were no press calls to discuss the new cards, no hints and not even a press release was issued. This could explain why only a handful of websites picked up the news when it was released earlier this month.

Unlike the recent GeForce GTS 250 rebrand, which resulted in a retail card, the GeForce 100-series cards will only be available to OEMs. As such, there’s little chance that upgraders looking for a new graphics card will be misled by the new names, although VR-Zone has dissected the INF files from various recent ForceWare drivers to ascertain that the new GPUs are still based on Nvidia’s ageing G92, G94, G96 and G98 cores.
