Gigabyte M912 Convertible Tablet PC Netbook Review

In my recent discussion about whether netbooks are already obsolete, I said that the segment needed a real game-changer, because it has become increasingly difficult to find the marketable advantage. With the GIGABYTE M912 netbook, we may have found a possible answer. Unlike so many other netbooks that are flooding the market these days, the GIGABYTE M912 isn’t just a little laptop; it also happens to be a convertible tablet PC.

We had the opportunity to take a look at the M912 during CES 2009 and now we’ve finally managed to get a review unit in our hands. GIGABYTE tells us that this is quite the hot item and they can’t stock the shelves quickly enough. Let’s see what this buzz is all about.

Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB (WD20EADS) SATA Hard Drive Review

A few weeks ago, we reviewed one of Western Digital’s flagship drives, the Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB SATA hard drive. Like WD’s top end Velociraptors, the drive was engineered and designed for desktop performance with a 7200RPM spindle speed and dual processors to share the load. As a result, it tends to be noisier like its Velociratpor brother. It also consumes more power, like its Velociraptor brother. Today, we’re going to head to the quieter and more eco-friendly side of the Western Digital family.

Western Digital’s Caviar Green series represents drives that are quieter and that use far less power than their high performance counterparts. The high capacity of these drives also makes them ideal for devices that get turned on all day long like Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices or home theatre PCs. Today, we’ll be looking at the largest (and greenest) hard drives currently on the market, the Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB (WD20EADS).

Toshiba 2009 Product Showcase Review

Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge was the venue for Toshiba’s 2009 product launch, where the company unveiled a whole host of new LCD TVs, DVD players and digital recorders, as well as giving the assembled journalists a glimpse of its forthcoming Net Player and Cell TV technologies.

Despite the recession and the company’s withdrawal from the high-definition disc player market, Toshiba remained upbeat at the launch and announced a 13 per cent rise in UK revenues over the last year. The company is also standing by its decision to shun Blu-ray, with DVD product manager Fiona Patterson pointing out that 253m DVDs were sold in December 2008 compared with 1.5m Blu-ray discs - though how long Tosh can maintain this stance as Blu-ray grows in popularity is anyone’s guess.

Toshiba casts its Net

The obvious highlight at the launch was the Toshiba Net Player, a prototype of which was unveiled for the first time in the UK, but ironically it was the one thing we weren’t allowed to take pictures of because the design may change before its official launch at IFA later this year.

NZXT Whisper Chassis Review

As Jeff Dunham would say: Silence I kill you ! Okay okay, I know I used Achmed’s pun already once before. But for reviews as shown today, it’s just so valid. A while ago the chassis demons from NZXT released their Whisper series of PC cases. A chassis designed to remain quiet under most common circumstances.

Here at Guru3D.com we really digg that stuff. And admittedly .. personally I am a bit of a rare breed, I like high-performance gear, yet require it to be silent. And that’s somewhat of a paradox in the technology industry where everything gets faster and faster, more hotter than hot .. and thus more noisy, to cool it down again.

It’s the sole reason that for that fact alone I can only applaud manufacturers to design enthusiast oriented gear while keeping noise levels under control. Luckily this is a trend that is slowly picking up as yeah .. there’s a good market for it. And where’s a market, there’s money to be made.

Thermaltake BigTyp 14 Pro CPU Cooler Review

Here at TweakTown, Thermaltake keeps us pretty busy testing their products. With all sorts of products in their line-up, it almost makes Thermaltake the one stop shop for all things aftermarket. They carry everything from sound deadening material to wire management ideas, coolers and power supplies. You name it, Thermaltake has a solution. This time we are going to have a look at another of their CPU cooling solutions that incorporates a 140mm fan to get things moving.

Thermaltake has sent for this review, the BigTyp 14 Pro. As mentioned, the BT14 Pro is a large cooler using a 140mm fan mounted in a horizontal fashion to blow air down through the CPU cooler and towards the motherboard. While this concept has been tried before and tested averagely, Thermaltake took things to a much larger scale with how the BT14 Pro is assembled. I will elaborate a bit more on these “bigger is better” features as they come up throughout the review.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 260 iChill Accelero XXX Review

One of the companies out there in that big hardware market involved in cooling solutions is Arctic cooling. Personally I consider them to be in the top three of cooling manufacturers, ranking with names such as Zalman.

It is for that reason that we always get a little thrilled once we hear them announce new products. A week or two ago they announced two new VGA coolers. Among them a new Accelero XTREME GTX cooler, designated for the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 260/280/285.

The Accelero XTREME GTX coolers are equipped with no less than three 92mm PWM fans that run from 1,000 to 2,000 RPM. Together with five heatpipes, the Accelero XTREME GTX 280 achieves 250 Watt cooling capacity. And that’s roughly 31°C lower than NVIDIA’s reference cooler. Interesting eh ?

Then another favorite company of mine is Inno3D. This Asian company certainly has shown muscle and innovation when it comes to graphics cards over the past few years. Often they surprise me with original products. And that’s just so good, to be original and diversify yourself in this market. So when two of my favorite companies combine forces .. the outcome just can not disappoint.

Pickering Interfaces Introduces New 50-297 Pci Precision Resistor Card

Clacton on Sea, UK –Pickering Interfaces is expanding its range of precision resistor modules with the introduction of a PCI based Precision Resistor card.

Model 50-297 is a high density resistor simulator with a broad resistance range and high channel count which provides similar functionality to Pickering Interfaces well established 40-297 PXI solution. It is available in 3 standard configurations having resistance ranges of 1? to 230?, 2? to 13.5k? and 3? to 1.5M? with 18, 9 and 6 channels respectively. The 6 channel version has a setting resolution of 0.125?.

All versions have software interfaces for all popular programming environments based on simple resistance calls for each channel, allowing users to just request the resistance value required. The modules include calibration data that enables the driver to select the nearest value of resistance available.

PowerVR Details Multi-Core Mobile Phone GPU

Imagination Technologies, makers of the PowerVR graphics chip - which sits inside the iPhone, among other devices - is soon to make multi-core variants available. Specifically, the PowerVR SGX543MP will be available in single all the way up to 16-core versions - with both even and odd core numbers possible.
Imagination says that its multi-core chips will offer near-linear scaling of 95 per cent efficiency in both vertex and pixel processing. Similarly, additional cores won’t lead to any additional CPU load.
