Is it worth upgrading your notebook to an SSD drive?

OCZ sent me one of their fancy new Hypersonic notebooks around this time last year and today it is still quite a powerhouse for what I do with it, especially considering its size.

People often mistake it for a netbook, but then see how quick she runs with its speedy Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T9300 and 4GB of memory. I usually upgrade notebooks regularly (once a year), but this baby still delivers quite a punch. But what could we do to give it extra boost?

It came installed with a rather fast 200GB 7,200 RPM SATA notebook hard disk drive from Hitachi and it works rather well. However, I did start to notice that something may have been holding the notebook back, especially loading applications and with boot time.

ASUS Maximus II Gene Intel P45 mATX Motherboard Review

Now that the i7 has been around for about six months, and the fact that it has been very successful, both in function and sales, I assumed that we had pretty much seen the end of new upper-end LGA 775 products, at least from the major manufacturers. Sure, I expected some lower-end stuff to surface, mainly to deplete warehouse stock of obsolete components, but nothing special, nothing to really take notice of.

Micro ATX, or mATX form factor, really has been something that hasn't appealed to me in the past for a lot of reasons. Mainly, my rigs stay overclocked 24/7, so I tend to prefer larger cases for heat dissipation and to accommodate large air coolers. I don't do LAN parties but once a year or less, so portability isn't a huge concern.

Microsoft's Surface gets its first Service Pack, devs and yacht owners rejoice

Forget the future for just one second. Kicking off its TechEd conference last week, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for its tabletop-inclined Surface. The update's mostly developer-centric -- not too surprising given its small customer base at present -- with one of the only bullet points that'll directly interest the end user being new calibration guides for setting up the system without needing an external display. No indication on if set up still requires a keyboard a mouse, but if that's a concern, keep your fingers crossed they find a way around that before you pony up the $13,000 to join Lazarra and Roker as an early adopter.

ASUS Eee PC T91 clears the FCC: viable 3G & SSD upgrades

ASUS’ Eee PC T91 convertible touchscreen netbook has cleared the FCC, and the team there have done their usual job of stripping the hardware down to its more wirelessly-active components and taking fuzzy photos of each. It’s heaven for would-be T91 upgraders, of course, as it allows them to start making a list of possible tweaks.

Particular points of interest are the solid-state memory - which looks to be a standard 50mm board and as such readily exchangeable for larger-capacity versions - and the RAM slot being served by a user-accessible hatch on the bottom panel.

Crimson Red Dell XPS 16 in the wild?

So about that apparently canned crimson red Dell XPS 16 laptop. We received a handful of pics from a tipster who claims to have gotten one about a month ago when he returned his other, decided un-red model for a screen replacement. We don't want to say this is 100 percent legit without holding it in our hands, but if this is the beauty we once had the option to purchase, Dell, please, bring crimson back.
