ASUS Equips P30 And P80 Laptops With Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology

Remember Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology that debuted around this time last year? You know, that wicked cool invention that you’ve heard absolutely nothing about ever since? Evidently it’s still alive and kickin’, as ASUS has just announced that two of its lappies will come loaded with it. The P30 and P80 will both arrive with the so-called theft deterrent system, enabling owners to send a “poison pill” (it’s words, not ours) remotely, rendering their computer inoperable by “comprehensively shutting it down.” If you manage to reacquire it in one piece, a passphrase can be inputted in order to reactivate things. Still, we have to wonder how this will really detract thieves from snapping up unattended machines — we mean, do they really stop to check out the anti-theft software before wheeling away with your rig? We’re guessing not.

Ricoh - CX1 Review

If you like the convenience of owning a compact digital camera but at the same time want something that offers a wide range of image controls and a few unexpected features that steal a march on its rivals, then Ricoh’s CX1 may just be the kind of kit you’re looking for. Styled in sexy jet black (cool silver and muted pink are also available), it feels reassuringly weighty (180g) in the palm, measuring a relatively standard 101.5 x 58.3 x 27.9mm.

Boasting 9.29 megapixels, the CX1 showcases a new image processing engine (Smooth Imaging Engine IV) and a new high-speed image processing CMOS sensor. At the front Ricoh has managed to insert a 7.1x optical wide-angle zoom lens (28-200mm in 35mm film equivalent) and at the back a 3-inch, 920,000-pixel screen, alongside a neat row of buttons for Menu, Function, Self-timer and Display.

Dell Adamo And Macbook Air - We Show You Which Is Thinner

We’ve been hearing that the Dell Adamo is supposed to out-thin the Apple Macbook Air. Well, now that we have the Adamo in our Labs, we can tell you this: Depending on where you apply the ruler, the Adamo is thinner. The Adamo measures 0.65 inches all around, whereas the Air has a tapering design that goes from 0.76 inches in the back to 0.16-inches in the front bezel. Judging by our comparison photos (thanks, Zach Honig!), though, I think the Air should get the bragging rights. Take a look at a couple more pics, after the jump.

And since we’ve recently reported Nokia wants to launch three touchscreen phone this fall, I guess we have no reasons not to believe the info above.

New iPhone, iPod Touch And Tablet Mac In The Works

Steve Jobs may have taken a leave of absence from Apple, but it seems that he is still running the show. That’s according to a WSJ report, and he has actually played a key role in the making of iPhone firmware 3.0 and in new product development. It was also confirmed that a new iPhone and new iPod Touch model is indeed on the way, which isn’t actually that surprising anymore, but what is interesting is that a tablet Mac was also mentioned being in the works. It’s supposedly bigger than the iPhone, but a lot smaller than current laptops. Could this finally be the Macbook Nano netbook that has been rumored in the past? Well, we can only hope for now.

Refurbished Acer Aspire One AOA 110-1722 Netbook Review

Most netbooks are less expensive than larger laptop computers, but many of us may still be deterred by the price of certain desirable netbooks. There are a fair number of them out there that retail in the $400 to $600 range and this is creeping too close to the range of a “real” notebook. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have that portable Internet-surfing device on a more modest budget? With the Acer Aspire One, you can. There are configurations of the Aspire One that sell for $400 or more, but if you look to the lower end of the range, there are more affordable options as well.

Saving even more money, you may want to consider the refurbished route by picking up the less expensive Acer Aspire One AOA 110-1722 which is sold by Geeks.com. As you may recall, I had a look at some other refurbished products from Geeks in the past, including some really affordable digital cameras and a debranded HP LCD monitor. They also have an extensive selection of refurbished laptop computers.

Quiet PC Ultra-Quiet Xbox 360 Premium Review

As great a gaming console as the Xbox 360 is, there’s a reason that for any game available on the PS3 as well, that’s the version I’ll be using: the PlayStation doesn’t sound like a wind tunnel every time I ask it to perform even the simplest of tasks. And don’t even get me started on that DVD drive. Those fans whir merrily away inside the Xbox 360 with good reason, though. Lest we forget, Microsoft’s console is rather prone to getting just a little hot. The failure rate, courtesy the red ring of death, doesn’t inspire much confidence in the Xbox 360.

Lian Li offered those willing to crack open their Xbox 360 a possible solution to the console’s tendency to overheat, in the form of the PC-XB01 case. However, transposing the Xbox 360 from one case to the other to avert its overheating problems introduces a potential hitch of its own: voiding the warranty. Bearing in mind Microsoft is offering free replacement of any console succumbing to the RROD (within three years of manufacture) so trying to avert a failure seems ironically counterintuitive. Quiet PC thinks there’s one another reason you might want an XB01 case though. Transposing the guts of an Xbox 360 to a roomier case affords the opportunity to adorn it with some much needed noise-reducing cladding.

ONDA VX797HD And VX555HD PMPs Announced

Everyone is going high-def in China. ONDA, one of the most prolific MP4 player manufacturers in China, has just announced the 7-inch VX797HD and a smaller 3-inch VX555HD. As their names suggest, both support high-definition playback.

Not much info yet, but they seem to be more of the same in the ONDA VX series. iPod Touch lookalikes with pretty good video codec support. The 797HD has a remote added for obvious reasons–you stand the PMP about three feet from your comfortably reclining self. Looking at these new ONDA PMPs make me realize it won’t be too long before they refresh their inventory with more interesting types.
