Intel Applies “Stars” Ratings To Processors, Processors Lose Self-Esteem

It looks like those confused by the multitude of Intel processors out there needn’t linger in indecision any longer, as Intel itself has now come up with a new scheme that it hopes will help simplify the buying process significantly. As you can see above, that consists of a new rating system that gives processors between one and five stars, which Intel says indicates “relative performance, not a price-performance type of thing.” As you might expect, the five-star rating is reserved for the like of the Core i7 and Core i7 Extreme, with the one-star ranks apparently occupied solely by various Celeron processors — the Atom, it seems, is in a class all its own. Somewhat less notably, Intel has also taken the opportunity to roll out some spruced processor logos, which should already be showing themselves in stores along with displays featuring the new star rating system.

Opinion - Nokia Netbooks And Mobile Computer Plans

The rumors about the upcoming Nokia netbooks/mobile computers/mobile internet devices are intensifying.

Only yesterday we reported about upcoming Linux (Maemo) based Nokia MID and Nautilus devices.

Then there was a recent report by TheStreet.com that Nokia is nearing a deal with Foxconn to produce it’s first netbooks. It seems to be a continuation of February rumor that Nokia is considering joint development of netbooks with some Taiwanese companies.

And then we got that Nokia Sparrow device that they showed to partners during MWC. Which may or may not be the same Nokia Nautilus.

Apple May Release Unibody iPods Soon

Apple has had some success with their unibody MacBooks, so it makes sense that they would start considering the possibility of introducing unibody iPods in the future. That’s what this recently released patent application suggests.

A unibody iPod could mean a lighter, thinner and tougher iPod, plus they save money by using fewer parts. Otherwise, the iPod classic shown here remains pretty much the same, but “the final part looks like it was machined down from a large thick slab of material,” according to Apple.

It will be interesting to see if Apple actually does this or not.

iRiver’s New P7

The latest rectangle-that-goes-in-a-dock-and-improves-your-life is iriver’s P7, a portable media viewer that lets you view photos, watch movies/TV shows and listen to music. Apple kind of already makes one of these things–with a special added feature that lets you, like, talk to other people–but P7 proponents will point out that its larger 4.3″ screen should provide a better viewing experience. No arguments from me there; I swear 30 Rock is less funny when it’s viewed small.

Thor’s Hammer: XIGMATEK’s Weapon For The God Of Thunder And Lightning Review

Don’t worry, our today’s article is not going to talk about the role of ancient weaponry in myths and legends. It is just that XIGMATEK chose a name like that for their new cooler. Well, let’s see how interesting and effective the new cooling solutions turned out.

The German-Scandinavian mythology has a god of thunder, storms and fertility. His name is Thor. Thor travels in a bronze chariot, wears a pair ofiron gloves needed to hold the red-hot weapon and a magic belt which boosts the wearer’s strength. As for the weapon, Thor owns a short-handled hammer, which, when thrown at a target, returns magically to the owner and also has the power to throw lightning bolts. It is the latter that XIGMATEK Co., Ltd. have chosen as inspiration for their new CPU cooler called Thor’s Hammer (SS126384).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Review

There’s an old saying in photography—the best camera is the one you have with you. Meaning something is always better than nothing for capturing snapshots. That said, while we all have cell phones with built-in cameras, for any function other than quickly sharing photos with another mobile handset or via online outlet, quality is pretty poor.

This year, we’ve already tested one excellent solution in the 12MP Canon PowerShot SX200 IS, a handy carry-around camera. Panasonic’s new DMC-ZS1 is similar in many ways, including a compact body, a potent 12x wide-angle zoom, intelligent auto and other features. It also costs $50 less since it’s a 10 megapixel digicam rather the Canon’s 12. So is this our new top pick of grab-and-go camreas? Let’s start shooting and find out…
