Mtron MOBI 3500 32GB SSD Review

While magnetic hard drives have been the mainstay of storage for the better part of the modern computer’s history, there has been foreshadowing of the demise of using magnetic spinning platters to hold information. It was years ago that pundits said the hard disk drive would be phased out in favor of new solid state technology. The idea was simple; Remove the mechanical components from the computing experience and replace it with something that could be manufactured like a traditional electronic component.

The advantages touted were saving power, saving space, and having greater reliability along with a proper failure curve. The draw back to the SSD technology as it lives today is the storage space offered by the drives on the market as well as the cost. The latter problem is going away as manufacturers ramp up production and the former seems to still be slipping away as traditional magnetic storage reached the 2 Terabyte milestone just last month. Regardless, SSD technology is the future of computing. Traditional magnetic storage will most likely be relegated to high capacity backup instead of tape.

Philips Gogear Aria, Opus, Vibe And Mix Hands-On, Launch Info

Philips announced its GoGear Aria and Opus players for Europe back in February, but they’ve finally got around to showing off the units Stateside, along with offering prices, a timeframe, and a bit of company. The 2-inch screened Aria lands this month in 8GB and 16GB versions for $80 and $100, respectively; the 2.8-inch QVGA Opus does 8GB at $100, with a 16GB model in the wings; the teensy new ViBE has a 1.5-inch screen and comes in 4GB and 8GB flavors for $50 and $60; and there’s a new little thumb DAP called the Mix, which is short on details. All the DAPs have FM radio and mics, and all but the Mix can do video. They also include trial subscriptions to and support for Rhapsody and Audible, along with a little browser widget to download YouTube videos and load them to the player — a nice touch. Still, the line is pretty lackluster; we played with the players briefly, and while the design is getting better, there’s still a lot of wasted space, mundane controls and ancient-seeming software — we suppose you get what you pay for. We did appreciate Opus’ inclusion of FLAC and OGG support, and its build quality really puts the rest of the line to shame.

Although the EX300 was launched last year, our review unit is updated with the latest hardware components. Here’s a quick look at the EX300 specifications:-

SilverStone RAVEN SST-RV01B-W Full Tower Case Review

In my short time with PC’s I have always looked to see what other people were using to house their hardware in. Some of the cleanest and sexiest PC builds were done in a couple of cases that caught my eye. These are the FT01 and the TJ09 cases from SilverStone. The only issue was that I always tended to opt to buy a cheaper case and spread my dollars elsewhere in the build. Nothing against SilverStone, I just couldn’t afford that kind of luxury at the time.

SilverStone has now released a new revolution to the ATX community by designing a chassis that allows the heat to naturally rise through the case by orienting the motherboard tray 90° to the right. This essentially lays the board on its side and then has the CPU fan and video cards exhausting out the top of the case. This concept seems so obvious now, but it took SilverStone to throw all their eggs in a new basket and run with it to actually bring this to the market. And still, this isn’t all of it! - SilverStone took another step outside the box of the “average” case and created stealth inspired panels and covers to make the RAVEN RV01 shaped like no other.
