Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200S and Q9550S 65W CPUs Review

Since the launch of their latest processor architecture in the form of the Core i7 processor line, Intel has been busy slowly reorganizing their desktop CPU offerings. While the Core i7 line-up currently takes a performance leadership position, it only covers the high end of the market at this time, and a new Core i7 capable platform can be a bit on the pricey side. This means the aging but trusty Core 2 line-up still has a place in Intel's front-line battle plans.

AMD's recent release of the refined Phenom II processor line has put quite a bit of pressure on Intel's Core i7 plans. While Phenom II can't compete toe-to-toe with Core i7 in pure performance, it's certainly very competitive when it comes to overall value, as we found out in our evaluation recently. However, in terms of performance for your dollar, Core 2 still holds the line for Intel and a series of price cuts over the last few months have positioned Core 2 to better compete in the mainstream and value segments.

VIA's P710-HD module brings 1080p to EPIA-P710 Pico-ITXe board

We've got to hand it to 'em -- VIA sure knows where the weak spot is in the netbook / nettop market, and it's doing an impressive job bringing 1080p to areas where it was once thought impossible. After trumpeting its Surfboard concept and VX855 chipset, the company is striking yet again from the Embedded Systems Conference with its P710-HD module. Said device, which works in conjunction with the EPIA-P710 Pico-ITXe board, brings full HD playback support to a mainboard that's almost small enough to fit in your oversized cargo pocket. The expansion module includes S3 Graphics' 4300E embedded GPU, 256MB of GDDR2 memory and support for dual DVI and HDMI outputs. Sadly, there's no mention of a price or release date, but we'd bet NVIDIA, Intel and the rest of the gang are definitely paying attention.

The HTC Touch Diamond2 is widely expected to continue the success that HTC has seen with its original HTC Touch Diamond smartphone. A new rumor has be circulating that hints at a European and Asian launch of the HTC Touch Diamond2 in mid-April. The new rumor falls in line nicely with a previous report that T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) Germany would be the first carrier to offer the HTC Touch Diamond2 and HTC Touch Pro2 in the first half of 2009.

We’re also hearing that the HTC Touch Diamond2 will sport a roughly $600 price tag at launch, although it’s not clear how much the US-spec HTC Touch Diamond2 will actually cost.

There isn’t much to go on at this point, but we’re keeping the hope alive for T-Mobile USA launching the HTC Touch Pro2!

Anandtech Explores The Virtues And Woes Of Today’s SSD

If you’re interested in SSD, chances are you’ve been paying attention to the allegations of performance degradation in Intel’s X25-M drives. AnandTech dives into the issue (and many, many more topics) in 31 page exploration of the state of solid state. It’s a spine-tingling read, in part explaining how write-speed degradation is largely thanks to partially used pages containing portions of deleted files. We all know deleted files typically aren’t really gone until they’re overwritten, a problem in SSDs because to clear a section of a page the entire page needs to be cleared. That entails moving anything you want to keep to the cache, wiping the whole page, then re-writing that good data from cache. The hope is that a new delete command dubbed TRIM (set to find support in Windows 7) will speed up writes by forcing the system to perform this work during deletes, but ahead of that the article still recommends Intel’s drives; even at their worst they’re still generally faster than the comparably priced competition when it comes to average use — not to mention faster than your platters.
