OCZ Summit Series SSDs Targeted For End Of April Launch

OCZ’s new top of the line SSDs use Samsung controllers

OCZ Technology is currently one of the top Solid State Drive manufacturers in the world. They have been aggressively developing new SSD products and bringing them to market, and can be credited for driving prices down through mass production and economies of scale.

As the company has never been afraid to experiment, they have tried prototypes with SSD flash controllers from different manufacturers. JMicron controllers are amongst the cheapest, so they go in lower end SSDs such as the Core and Solid series. The mid-range Apex series uses a JMicron RAID controller along with their flash controllers to improve performance. The high-end Vertex series uses a new flash controller from Indilinx that utilizes 64MB of cache to improve random read/write performance.

Apple iMac 24In - 2009 Edition Review

It’s well over a year since we looked at the Apple iMac last. Back then it was the first outing of the current aluminium design and it received a glowing endorsement, bagging itself an Editor’s Choice Award. It’s a testament to the quality of that machine that it’s taken so long for Apple to update the range, but it has done just that and we’ve got the 24in version here for your perusal.

Our version is only the entry-level 24in model, but even so its specification is very generous. Directing proceedings is an Intel Core 2 Duo proessor running at 2.66GHz. This is backed by a capacious 7,200rpm, 640GB hard drive as well as 4GB of 1,066MHz DDR3 RAM. Both these parts can be upgraded, though Apple is up to its usual shenanigans here by making the 1TB hard drive an £80 upgrade (i.e. the cost of a single drive), while upgrading to 8GB of RAM costs an astonishing £800! It’s just as well few people will need that much memory.

Bigfoot XENO Killer Pro & Ultra Gaming NICs

It’s been a long time since Bigfoot’s first-gen Killer K1 network card first tried to persuade us that $150 is a reasonable price for a NIC, and now the company is back with two new products. As with their predecessor, the Killer Xeno Ultra and Killer Xeno Pro promise reduced pings, but they now add voice chat offloading.

The Bigfoot Killer Xeno Pro is the new entry-level card (on the right in the picture above), and has a 400MHz Freescale 8314 processor together with the audio processor for VoIP, 128MB of RAM and a PCI Express x1 interface. Ports consist of 3.5-mm input and output connectors, an RJ-45 port and a single USB 2.0 port.

Dell Adamo Battery Not Replaceable

It seems Dell is emulating Apple in more ways than one with its new MacBook Air-rivalling “Adamo” laptop.

Like many recent Apple offerings, the ultra-thin Dell laptop will have a non-user-replaceable battery Pocket-lint has learnt.

This means that Adamo owners will not be able to hot swap batteries on the go - and will have to get their laptops sent back to Dell when their factory issued battery conks out.

Panasonic TX-L32X15B Television Review

Do you need Full HD? While LCD and plasmas TVs that boast Full HD 1080p resolution are rapidly becoming mainstream in terms of pricing, Panasonic wants to give you a choice.

In April it’s going to add this 32-inch LCD TV to its vast Viera pantheon, though the official price is only £50 cheaper than its Full HD 1080p version, the Panasonic TX-L32S10B. However, we found it online for just £599.

Unless you have - or plan to get - a Blu-ray player, PS3 or Xbox 360, you probably don’t need Full HD in your living room. All HDTV services (from Sky, Freesat and Virgin) available in the UK are broadcast in 1080i resolution; don’t confuse your “p” and your “i” - 1080i is a simple HD ready resolution that will look no better on a Full HD screen than on a telly such as the rather bulky TX-L32X15B.

Nvidia Plans Geforce GTX 275 Against Radeon HD 4890

AMD is getting ready to update their graphics card lineup with the introduction of the RV790-based Radeon HD 4890 – which we recently received and were able to confirm the specs. While no pricing information has been confirmed yet, the card is expected to debut on April 9 for about $250, and as mentioned over the weekend Nvidia plans to fire back that same day with the GeForce GTX 275.

According to reports, the new card is going to have the same amount of stream processors as the GTX 280 and GTX 285 (240) but it will have 896MB GDDR3 on a 448-bit memory interface. It is built around the 55nm G200b GPU and will boast a core speed of 633MHz as well as 1404MHz for the Shader and 1161MHz for the memory. Likewise, the company is aiming for a $229 to $279 price range for the card. It should be interesting to see how these two perform when they hit the bench – we already have a Radeon HD 4890 in our hands and are expecting to get the GTX 275 soon.

MSI X-Slim X340 Preview

MSI’s latest ultra-portable notebook, the X-Slim X340 has been stirring up quite a buzz since it was first revealed at CeBit and you’ll soon see why it has been getting all this attention. After all doesn’t the sleek, white form factor of this notebook remind you of a certain brand? We managed to snag an engineering sample to give you a quick preview.

It’s a Thin Line

Inevitably, the comparison with the Apple MacBook Air will be made and the best part of the X340 is that, measuring 1.98cm at its thickest point, it is pretty close to the 1.94cm on the Air. Furthermore, its weight of 1.3kg does give it the slight edge over the 1.36kg Air. The compromise however lies in the plastic chassis of the X340, which definitely feels cheap compared to the aluminum chassis of the Air.
