Quick Look At The Sony Vaio P- Coolest Notebook Ever

About 20-minutes ago my friend at FedEx dropped off the smallest box I have ever received with a full computer inside. The box is even smaller than the one that contained the Sony U-70 so long ago. This box has the Sony VAIO P ultra-portable notebook like the one Kevin and I saw at CES early this year.

This VAIO P comes to me on loan courtesy of Dynamism, importers of cool Asian computers. This model is currently only available from Dynamism as it is a Japanese model that is not sold by Sony in the U.S. It has an Intel Atom processor running at a fast 1.86GHz, a 64GB solid-state drive and 2GB of memory. I’ve only had it in my hands for about 20-minutes so no real impressions yet, but here are some photos showing just how small this thing is:

Digital Storm Custom Core i7 Gaming System Review

Boutique system builders tend to fall into three categories, there are the more custom or high-end offerings from some of the larger names like Dell/Alienware or HP/Voodoo (though you may or may not classify them as “boutique”), there are offerings from large e-tailers like Tiger Direct’s SystemMax, and then there are independent companies as well, obviously. A few of the major names in this third category are MainGear, Velocity Micro and the company whose product we have on the bench for you today–Digital Storm.

Digital Storm as a company has been around since 2001. It has become fairly well known in the community for building solid computer systems, primarily targeted at the enthusiast, though they also have a workstation and server product line-up as well. The company has historically taken a design approach to their products that incorporates only top shelf, standard components in an effort to offer the consumer a high quality product that is both easily serviceable and upgradeable down the road. That said, even with top shelf components, quality systems with a reasonable value and price point are not always equal to just the sum of their parts. We’ll step you through the salient features, performance, and value of Digital Storm’s 950si custom Core i7 gaming system in the pages ahead and let you be the judge of what this boutique builder, with a history for quality products, has to offer.

NVIDIA Quadro CX Pro Graphics For Adobe CS4 Review

Adobe, the software development powerhouse behind Photoshop, Premiere, and dozens of other content creation suites, has finally embraced the power of the GPU. Amazingly, until Adobe’s CS4 suite of graphics software came out this year, the company which has nearly built their empire on graphics related software, relied entirely on the system’s CPU for processing. Despite major advances in the performance and infrastructure which surrounds the GPU market, Adobe’s software was never written to take advantage of the newer programmable hardware. No matter how fast of a graphics card you had, nothing would make Adobe software run faster than higher clocked processors, more memory, or faster hard disks. Until now, the graphics card has been completely secondary in the Adobe world with the exception of a few custom filters, only being used for display output rather than using the graphics processor for its intended purpose, accelerating on-screen graphics.

With Adobe’s newly launched Creative Suite 4, the game changes completely, and there are some pretty interesting repercussions because of this change. Many applications in Adobe’s new CS4 suite, specifically Photoshop, After Effects, Acrobat, Premiere, and Bridge, are now supporting GPU acceleration. Now, adding GPU acceleration to the mix is not a cure-all for performance, and suddenly doesn’t throw all of the graphics processing on to the GPU. These applications, as system intensive as they are, are still programs which work and live in a 2D world; there is very little true 3D interaction in these programs, which is typically where GPUs thrive. However, through the use of OpenGL, Adobe can effectively use your system’s GPU to accelerate some 2D drawings on-screen.

Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition NAS Server Review

You’d be hard pressed these days to find a small business or even family home that doesn’t have at least a few computers being used by a number of different local users. This multi-user scenario poses at least a couple of potential complications for managing all the files and data that gets created, stored, and used by the different users: How do you share files with the other users on your network and how do you seamlessly back up files that are stored on the different user systems?

Network-attached storage (NAS) is the answer, and the new Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition Dual-drive network storage server aims to provide simple solutions to these and other file-sharing and backup challenges–as well as a number of useful features that serve the needs of small business and home users. In fact, home users should not be put off by the “Business Edition” moniker; this NAS device is well-suited for homes with multiple, networked users. In our opinion, the Business Edition part of the product name was added on so as to differentiate this NAS device from Maxtor’s previous iteration of the device, simply called the Maxtor Central Axis, which is still widely available.

Razer Mamba Wireless Gaming Mouse Hands-On

Late last month, we had the opportunity to have a listen with Razer’s Carcharias headset, and now we’re seeing just how precise the same outfit’s latest mouse is when it comes to clicking oh-so-carefully within Minesweeper. The downright gorgeous Razer Mamba just showed up on our doorstep, and we couldn’t resist photographing the unboxing experience and hosting it up for all to enjoy. Our Mamba came housed in a special Razer suitcase that also included the aforementioned Carcharias headset. The mouse packaging alone was some of the most extravagant we’ve seen, with even the delightfully braided USB cable (yes, it’s wired or wireless) encased in a soft black cover. Bottom line? The aesthetics here are top-notch all the way around, and while we plan on giving this thing a run-through over the weekend in order to speak on actual performance, we’d suggest diving in below to whet your appetite.

Cyberpower Gamer Dragon 9500 Desktop Gets Reviewed

It’s not the first Dragon-based gaming rig out there but, according to ComputerShopper, Cyberpower’s new Gamer Dragon 9500 may just be one of the best bargains around, with it even able to do double duty as a media PC if you’re looking to keep your number of boxes to a minimum. That latter attribute comes larger from its addition of a Blu-ray drive, but the system expectedly really delivers the goods when it comes to gaming, with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics (with 2GB of DDR5 memory) helping to pump out some respectable frame rates at even ridiculous resolutions. The $1,499 base price will also get you a generous 1TB hard drive, 4GB of RAM and, of course, the 3.6GHz AMD Phenom II X4 940 processor at the heart of the rig. Hit up the link below for the full rundown, and a few benchmark numbers.

Iomega StorCenter iX2 Review

There I was halfway through building a home server PC for backup and media distribution on my network, using the Microsoft Home Server OS, when this diminutive (8 x 12.5 x 20cm) StorCenter iX2 comes along and effectively makes the whole darn thing redundant.

Thanks to its onboard uPnP media server, Iomega’s StorCenter does pretty much everything I wanted my dedicated server PC to do, but in a cheaper, smaller, more user-friendly package. This iteration offers 2TB of storage in a two-disk RAID array, with Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and two USB 2.0 ports.
