Toshiba X305-Q725: Quad-Core Gaming Notebook

We recently received Toshiba’s latest X305-Q725 laptop, which targets the mobile gaming sector. We have our own thoughts on what is best in this sort of market, and we know plenty of people that think this sector is a joke, to put it bluntly. However, while many people have no interest in desktop replacement notebooks, there are users that want this sort of system, and this review is targeted at that audience. Everything clear? Good, let’s continue.

This is the first laptop we’ve been able to test that ships with a quad-core CPU, and moreover it’s a Penryn-based mobile quad-core chip as opposed to one of the larger units that simply uses a desktop CPU. The processor isn’t left without a supporting cast, though, with NVIDIA’s current top-end mobile GPU, a 64G SSD backed by a 320GB HDD, 4GB RAM, and Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate. Nvidia Decides Not To Rebrand 9800 Gt As GTS 240

Following Nvidia’s highly questionable decision to rebrand its GeForce 9800 GTX+ as the GeForce GTS 250 last month, it looks as though the company has learned its lesson from the public reaction. According to DailyTech, the company had similar plans to rebrand the GeForce 9800 GT as the GeForce GTS 240, but has now decided against it.

The site claims to have seen a confidential email from the company in response to “pressure from frustrated GPU board partners,” which tells its customers to ignore the GeForce GTS 240 brand and instead focus on three types of card bearing the GeForce 9800 GT name. As well as the vanilla GeForce 9800 GT, there is also a GeForce 9800 GT OC and a reduced-power version.

ARM-Based Netbooks Primed To Invade Computex?

Steppin’ out in the world, are we ARM? Shortly after hearing that OLPC was eying the brand for processors in the XO-2, Digitimes is now reporting that ARM-based platform makers including Qualcomm and Freescale are looking to unveil netbooks at this year’s Computex trade show in Taipei. Granted, none of this has been confirmed just yet, but we’re hearing that a model with Freescale’s i.MX51 CPU (the ARM Cortex A8) and a version with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPU (to be manufactured by Wistron) will be on hand. Not shockingly, in the same breath we’re told that NVIDIA Tegra-based systems will appear “at a later time.” So, is Computex the show where Intel finally takes a little heat in the netbook market? And no, VIA didn’t (and doesn’t) count.

Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 Review

Lately, Nvidia has developed the rather bad habit of renaming previous generation models and then trying to pass them off as part of the latest generation of graphics cards.

Previous examples include the 8800GS becoming the 9600GSO and the 8800GT being rebranded as the 9800GT, both of which resulted from the G92 chip spanning across the GeForce 8 and GeForce 9 series of cards.

The latest spate of renaming stems largely from Nvidia’s difficulty in getting a scaled down version of the GT200 out the door to cater to the lower segments of the market - where the majority of sales reside. Consequently Nvidia has no choice but to let the G92 (and its derivatives) live on even longer to fill in this part of the market.
