Patriot Viper PC3-12800 6GB Tri-Channel Memory Review

The evolution of memory is pretty simple despite all the frequencies and timings. First, there was single channel memory like the PC-100 and PC-133 series when Socket A and Slot 1 processors were the pinnacle. Second, dual channel memory was born which did an excellent job of keeping our Intel sockets 939, AM2, 478, and LGA 775 fed with plenty of bandwidth. This included DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 memory. And third, the latest triple channel memory arrives supporting sockets LGA 775 and LGA 1366.

ODD-Equipped Asus Eee PC 1004DN Nearing US Launch?

The Asus Eee PC 1004DN made its first appearance during CES 2009, and while Asus specified that they won’t be launching this netbook any time soon, it has just cleared testing at the FCC, which means it can now be used inside the U.S. The FCC certification also gives Asus a reason to finally release this new netbook, provided that it is ready for the market. The most interesting part of the Asus Eee 1004DN is its built-in optical disk drive, squeezed in on the side, which makes it the first Asus-made netbook that’s got a disk drive. It will also have Intel’s new 1.66GHz N280 Atom processor. No word yet on official sale release date or price, but we’ll be waiting for it and will update you when it comes out.

Fujitsu Siemens Introduces Zero-Watt Esprimo 7935 PC

Calling it a “zero-watt” PC may be a bit of a stretch, but Fujitsu Siemens is nonetheless breaking a bit of new ground with its new Esprimo 7935 PC, which supposedly consumes no energy at all when it’s powered off, as opposed to the one to four watts an average PC consumes unless it’s actually unplugged. As you may recall, Fujitsu has already gotten in a bit of practice with its zero-watt monitor, although the PC takes things a bit farther by switching into in a low-power mode for a predetermined time period each day to get its necessary business done, after which it cuts the power off completely. According to Fujitsu, the PC also comes with a power adapter that’s 89 percent efficient and, to add a bit more eco-friendly cred, it also conforms to the EPA’s new Energy Star 5.0 standard.

Samsung: AMOLED Laptop Displays In 2009, Flexibles In 2010

Samsung has publicly declared its goal of doubling AMOLED production in 2009, with a further doubling in 2010. According to Daniel Lamberti, brand manager at Samsung Mobile, AMOLED will reach economy of scale sometime this year, with TVs, laptops and monitors all commercially viable. Come 2010, and we’ll see flexible Samsung AMOLED displays become commercially viable too. Samsung SDI currently has a manufacturing capacity of two million units per year; by the end of 2010, that should have reached eight million.
Predicted sales of OLED-based panels are expected to jump by two-thirds in 2009; three of Samsung’s headline cellphones at Mobile World Congress this year used AMOLED displays. According to Lamberti, manufacturing costs are now the limiting factor in AMOLED, but that will be addressed before the year is out.

ASUS BC-06B1ST Blu-Ray Disc Optical Combo Drive Review

It wasn’t more than a few months ago that Benchmark Reviews tested the ASUS BC-1205PT Blu-ray Drive, which was proven to be a future-proof asset with the format war recently ended in favor of BD media. But sometimes technology isn’t adopted quite as fast as we might think, because in the age of Blu-ray there are people out there who still haven’t made the transition into a DVD-burner. Unlike CDs and DVDs, Blu-ray Disc isn’t in every household, and since music and movies seem to work perfectly well on the older platforms there might not be any real need for such a premium storage device.
In this article, we do away with the benchmark tests and take a subjective look at the ASUS BC-06B1ST Blu-ray disc optical combo drive. After all, there aren’t really very many BD-drives on the market to begin with for there to be a worth-while comparison. Sure, we could create a few dual-layer DVD coasters to see how fast that happens, but in the end it doesn’t concentrate on the primary features a SATA Blu-ray drive can offer. Benchmark Reviews tests the functionality and explores the feature set offered by the ASUS BC-06B1ST Blu-ray combo drive.
