The $10 Laptop Actually Costs $20

The $10 laptop was officially introduced on the market by the Indian government with all guns blazing. The funniest thing about all this event is that the Sakshat (this is how the laptop was named) will actually be sold for $20. Even so the price is more than perfect but let’s see what lies under its case.

PearC Launches ‘The PC With Mac Os X’

Until the verdict is given in the Apple vs. Psystar fiasco, we can only assume that PearC knows what it’s doing when stating that the German law allows it to sell PCs with OS X pre-installed on them. And wait ’till you see the prices on these babies! Just like Psystar, PearC’s business is to manufacture, assemble, and pre-install computer systems with an operating system (perhaps reverse engineer some software here and there), upon which the system can be shipped out to whomever ordered it.
The only problem is that, unlike Microsoft, Apple doesn’t like computers other than Macs running its OS. Still, PearC believes it isn’t doing anything wrong by pre-installing its Mac clones with OS X. In fact, the company advertises the PearC computer as “the PC with Mac OS X.” It’s branded right there on their web site, near the company’s logo.

MSI Offers Free Q-Face And Windy Applications For Wind Netbook Users

Looking for free applications for your Windows-powered MSI Wind? Well, then you’ll be happy to hear about two such things courtesy of MSI itself, and they are the MSI Q-Face and Windy Zone classic game pack. According to MSI, the MSI Q-Face (currently v.1.0.0.8) lets users easily “transform your icon on instant messaging software, by putting a hat on your picture, changing into a cute puppy, or adding a frame of bubbles around the image. Q-Face brings fun and excitement to the never-changing world of instant messaging!” Meanwhile, the Windy Zone game pack is a collection of six classic games that include Star Mission, Chicken Shake, Chicken Invader and Island War. Both programs are provided for free, but MSI doesn’t say where these are available for download. I’m guessing these will be bundled with new MSI Wind netbooks at retail. If you’re a fan of simple entertainment, I’m sure you’ll find these very useful.

RAM With Radiation Hazard Logo

The new DDR3 RAM from Mushkin comes cloaked in an aluminum jacket painted with the radiation symbol. That symbol doesn’t make the memory look scary, it makes the makers look weird. The specs, though, are good enough. The kit comes with 6GB of memory, clock rating at 1600MHz, 7-8-7-20 latency and low a 1.65V rating. They probably should have named it Uranium or Thorium, but they’ve used a much stranger name, 998679r.

Skooba Adds Checkthrough Messenger Bag To Tsa-Friendly Line

I wonder what gear bag James took to Las Vegas yesterday? I know which one he didn’t take: the newest Checkthrough Messenger option from Skooba. This new bag safely holds “all 15/15.4-inch machines, most 16- and many 17-inch models” so it’s for the traditional notebook crowd. I suspect this 8.3-pound monster need not apply, though.
The padded bag offers over a dozen pockets including one, the Doc-Pocket™, that’s dedicated to holding your travel docs for quick access. Of course the best part is the quick unzip that exposes the laptop contents in a flat package. To an airport security screener, your laptop appears the same as if it were in a bin. There’s no need to remove your notebook from this bag when going through security at the airport.

HP UK Spurns Linux In Its New Netbook Offerings

Looks like anyone in the U.K. hoping to buy a new HP netbook with Linux is going to be sorely disappointed. For reasons unspecified, the company’s decided not to offer the Mini 1000 or the Mini 2140 with a pre-install of Linux — standard options for the U.S. versions of both. Current U.K. HP Linux offerings include the 2133, but it’s an older model, so the lack of it for the newer models may signal a trend moving forward. HP will apparently offer its Ubuntu-based Mobile Internet Experience as a download, however, so all hope’s not dead. Well, you can’t always get what you want, can you?

Intel Socket LGA 1155, 1156 And 1567 Pictures Leaked

Intel is expected to launch new Nehalem based processors later this year, which will also mark the debut of new LGA sockets. The global leading chip maker is expected to announce the arrival of the new LGA 1155, 1156 and 1567, and on that note, a couple of leaked photos have made their way on the Internet, displaying the design features of what is said to be Intel’s next-generation sockets for upcoming Core i5 and Xeon processors.
The pictures surfaced on Intel’s Design Development Tools site and were picked up by pcgameshardware.com. They appear to indicate that the giant manufacturer is getting ready for its future Core i5 processors and the new Nehalem-based Xeon server processors. The LGA 1155 and 1156 sockets are designed for Core i5 CPUs, enabling PC users to take advantage of a performance level similar to that of the more expensive Core i7.

Sony Dishes Details about VE-5 TVs

If you’re serious about getting an energy-efficient TV, you may want to look at Sony’s Bravia VE-5 line of LCDs when they become available this summer. Sony seems to be making a hard push in energy efficiency this year, and the company is really excited about this line of LCDs that uses a different form of fluorescent backlighting and can cut power consumption by 40 percent when compared to conventional LCD models, Sony says.
I recently had a chance to discuss the details of the line’s features with Nate Kraft, Sony’s senior marketing manager for the TV group.

Nvidia Nforce 980a SLI Chipset Slated For March Release

It looks like we should be expecting a few more products from the Santa Clara, California-based graphics chip maker, NVIDIA, as recent rumors point to a new nForce 980a SLI chipset. Said product is slated to be released next month, which could mean that motherboard makers might be showcasing some new products, based on the aforementioned chipset, at the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany.
However, according to a recent news-article on vr-zone, the chipset will come out as a rebranded version of NVIDIA’s current nForce 780a SLI.

CPUs Of The Future Will Store And Process Data

Researchers have geared to get magnetic data storage capabilities of semiconductor materials to our daily use devices, intending to make them smaller and faster. Computers and other devices use CPUs to execute programs and have separate units for storage. Therefore, even the fastest device takes time in execution of data, because the data takes time in traveling from the unit where it is stored to the unit where it has to be executed. The concept of a vital magnetic characteristic from the semiconductor materials demonstrated for the first time by the scientists of the National Institute of Standards and Technology would be a breakthrough that’ll provide devices with only one unit to both compute and store data.

Vye S41A Touchscreen UMPC With DVD Burner Gets Price Slash

Ultraportables with integrated optical drives are rare beasts - the netbook world only has one, for instance - and they usually carry a pretty high price premium. That was certainly the case when the VYE S41A first arrived, complete with its convertible 7-inch touchscreen, DVD burner and 800MHz Intel A110 processor: you were looking at around $1,500 when it first launched. Now, Expansys UK have it listed for just £449.99 ($661).
That’s quite a lot of UMPC (or quite a small amount, depending on how you look at it) for the money. Okay, so the processor probably isn’t going to be doing any HD video crunching anytime soon (though if a 600MHz Intel A100 can cope with Windows 7, the S41A should have no problems) but the 80GB hard-drive is reasonable for a companion device of this size, and there’s WiFi, Bluetooth and a similar range of ports as you’d find on a current netbook.

Intel Atom N280 Begun Shipping

The Intel Atom N280 is expected to make its first appearance in the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. However other netbooks boasting the updated part, coupled with the HD-capable (720p video playback) GN40 chipset, are likely to arrive soon thereafter as Intel has now confirmed it has begun shipping the successor to its almost ubiquitous N270 low power processor to PC makers.
On the processing front, the still single core N280 isn’t much of an improvement over its older sibling, bumping up the speed to only 1.66GHz from 1.6GHz, but the increased front-side bus speed from 533MHz to 667MHz and improved graphics chipset will hopefully make this a worthy upgrade. Interestingly, the Atom N280 was initially slated for a Q2 release.
