CES 2009: Corsair TEC Memory Cooler

Corsair Memory showed off the the industry’s first thermoelectric (TEC) cooled memory modules today at CES and Legit Reviews was on hand to take a look at this ice cold memory cooler. TEC’s used to be reserved for enthusiasts living on the edge of overclocking, before LN2 and Dry Ice became the “mainstream” it is today. TEC cooling your CPU or graphics card is not as popular as it once was but CoolIT and Vigor Gaming have made news over the last couple of years with TEC solutions.

Corsair’s Peltier Memory Cooler Gets Demonstrated

Corsair’s Dominator memory can apparently get quite hot, particularly if the overclocking bug catches you right. If a product shown off at CES hits the commercial market, however, everything is sure to stay cool. The Peltier cooling device is expected to play nice with second-gen Dominator modules, and when attached to existing heatsinks it can be used to cool a larger heat block in pretty much any water cooling setup. We know, you’re probably scratching your head, but hop on past the break for a quick video demonstration.

Blackberry-Controlled Door Locks

I tend to forget that I’ve locked my front door. I do lock my front door, of course; but it’s the sort of automatic action that’s really easy to forget you’ve done. So I’ve spent many a day sitting on the subway, worried that I did not, in fact, lock my front door, when I did.

Look at that. Less than £70 for 4GB of RAM. And as much as we love the technical geekery that makes DDR3 better than DDR2, this configuration outperformed the higher bandwidth rig in several key tests.
The conclusion is very clear: four gigabytes is the price/performance sweet spot, regardless of the speed rating.

Is gesture-based remote control the next biggest thing since the touchscreen? Last week, we saw Sony Ericsson’s new W508 Walkman phone, which lets you ignore a call and shut off the ringer with the wave of your hand. ASRock N7AD-SLI Review

Over the past couple of months Intel’s new Core i7 CPUs and X58 chipset have come to rule the high end of PC performance but the mainstream is still dominated by LGA775 motherboards that support Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors. So here we are with the ASRock N7AD-SLI which supports LGA775 with SLI graphics thanks to its Nvidia nForce 740i SLI chipset.
We’re well used to the idea of budget motherboards that make the most of the features in the chipset but we have to confess that the nForce 740i SLI didn’t immediately spring to mind. Clearly it is a basic chipset that supports a single PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot or dual x8, if you prefer to run SLI, but there is no digital switch and the ASRock employs a flip card to change from one mode to the other, which is a little bit inconvenient. There are six SATA II ports with RAID and six USB 2.0 ports with headers for four more USB ports which is all very reasonable when you consider the low selling price of this motherboard.

Viliv S7 Hands On And Vaio P Comparo

As promised, we’ve made a run over to check out Viliv’s forthcoming S7 netbook tablet, bringing along the ever-popular VAIO P to see how the two stack up (as well as an Eee 1000H for good measure). As you can see, the S7 actually isn’t that much larger than the Sony, maybe 30 percent thicker and a little bit wider, but also a bit shorter. The thing manages to find room for a track pad on top of the keyboard, but it’s an awfully small one, so thank goodness for the (non-multi) touch screen. Also small is that keyboard, which is one of the most painful we’ve yet experienced on a netbook, featuring arrow and punctuation keys that even a pygmy would fat-finger. But, compromises must be made when making machines small, and small this one is. Viliv has written a custom skin that overlays the Windows XP install, demonstrated in a video below.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Review - Asus

Obviously not content with leaving the performance crown in the hands of ATI’s HD4870 X2, Nvidia has busted out the GeForce GTX 295. This new contender is essentially comprised of two GT200 cores operating internally in SLi mode.
Just like with the 9800GX2, Nvidia has gone with a dual PCB design, sandwiching a massive heatsink in between. Even though the GT200 core used here is a 55nm die shrink of the original 65nm version, it is evidently still much too big for two to share a single PCB.
