Digits-On With Verizon Wireless’ New Full QWERTY Motorola Rival


Motorola and Verizon Wireless announced the Rival this morning, a $99 messaging device that’s available in purple/black or red/white and is targeted at teenagers. At its pricepoint, it’s going to compete directly with the LG enV3 and the enV Touch, two phones that launched on Verizon Wireless last week. But it might not be other messaging phones that Motorola has to worry about.

As Mark Spoonauer noted yesterday, Apple is really going to flip this messaging phone market on its head and we’re just starting to see that happen. I hate to make the comparison here, but since yesterday I really have to, seeing that the Rival costs just as much as the iPhone 3G. Most consider Verizon Wireless’ network to be better than AT&Ts, but why not go with a phone that has thousands of apps available and one that can serve as a full-blown media device?
