AMD To Take On Intel’s Atom CPU


AMD is planning an Intel Atom-smasher for netbooks, meaning a CPU of their own to take on Intel’s Atom processor in the notebook market. Yep, notebook, not netbook. AMD CEO Dirk Meyer, believes netbooks are a fad and the term will disappear.

It will be everything the Intel Atom wants to be: It will be cheaper, consume less power, be smaller in size and offer more functionality. Samples are going to be readied to partners next year sometime. AMD is not too worried about competition. They don’t see ARM based platforms taking off (ie. Smartbooks) because of lack of software support (for Linux).
