NVIDIA announced the replacement to its 9M series of laptop graphics processors today, the G100M line. The 9M lineup included chips such as the 9400M and 9600M in the dual-GPU MacBook Pro setup. The new chips include the GeForce G105M, GeForce G110M and GeForce GT 130M. The upgraded performance over comparable chips in the 9M series is as high as 55%, according to NVIDIA’s tests. The GT 130M, considered the successor to the 9600M, should feature 17% faster graphics processing.
The G100M line GPUs support PhysX processing to speed up in-game computations and stereoscopic 3D rendering, which we just took a look at. All the processors also support running CUDA code, designed to let applications run on the high-speed graphics cores instead of your computer’s main processor. Some developers have taken advantage of cheap graphics chips to put together affordable systems delivering supercomputer-level processing power using the CUDA system.
